Oral History Work:

I have worked with Thandeka since 2010 on nearly 150 oral history interviews for two separate projects. Her skills are tremendous at every stage, from interview to transcription and translation. She navigates politically sensitive topics (like South Africa’s transition-era violence) in hostile situations (for example, a political meeting where members of the audience felt the convener should not have agreed to have us speak) with calmness and assurance. Her sensitivity and skills make even difficult interviews possible. She never overlooks an opportunity to recruit new participants, even when we are not officially “on duty.” She worked closely with me to make sure that we caught each word and nuance in translation for academic publication.Professor Jill E. It would not be an overstatement to say that my project would not have been possible without Thandeka’s dedication and hard work. She helped me select a research site, identified important stakeholders to interview, and not only translated for me but improvised on the spot to help get the best testimony from each of our informants. My project centered on delicate cultural issues that Thandeka navigated with sensitivity and humor (as always!). I cannot imagine doing research in the Pietermaritzburg-area without Thandeka’s assistance. She is an invaluable resource and an essential partner for conducting oral history research. Dr. Liz Timbs

Transcription and Translation Work:

Thandeka Majola transcribed and translated many interviews I did for a research project on customary marriage. She is an absolute joy to work with. Her transcriptions are accurate and her translations insightful, and she turns things around more quickly than I can get to them! She has been an invaluable contributor to my research, and she will be for yours, too.Professor Michael Yarbrough
